Parish Bulletin for Jan. 4, 2004

Feast of The Epiphany

Some years ago, now as a result of Vatican II, the day on which we celebrate this feast was moved to the Sunday celebration. Because of its significance to the whole season of Christmas-tide, we come together on Sunday to reflect once again on the gift of love that God has bestowed on the whole of humankind.

Those familiar with the Church’s Evening Prayer will recognize the following quotation:
“Three mysteries mark this holy day: today the star leads the Magi to the infant Christ; today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast; today Christ wills to be baptized by John in the river Jordan to bring us salvation.”

No, there are not three gospels readings today. Yes, we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord next Sunday. The thrust of the quotation lies in the divinity of Jesus and the manifestation of His divinity to the world. This is the meaning of Epiphany - the showing forth of God’s glory to all of us. The message of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany is a message of love to God’s human family. During Advent we are called to prepare for the coming of the Messiah and we remember the promises that foretell this coming.

Isaiah, in the first reading, brings to us a vision of the promises and calls all of us into a relationship with a God who is faithful, will be faithful and has been faithful to His people, even in their darkest times. At Christmas, we celebrate the coming of Christ in history, the revelation, the fulfilment of the promises of old. On Epiphany, we stand in awe with the Magi as we experience once more the mystery of the Word made flesh and prepared to dwell among us.

Matthew’s dramatic story of plots and subplots, of threats and near misses, tells us that the Light burning in the darkness will not endure without struggle. Throughout his gospel account, Matthew reveals that Jesus is the fulfilment of all the promises and prophesies of old - he reveals a God who is faithful to His word. As promised by the prophets, the birthplace is Bethlehem; as promised in the first reading, Gentiles sages from foreign lands have followed the star and acknowledge the birth of Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The new twist here is the revelation that the promises are not just for the chosen people, but extend to all of the human race.

Today too we are faced with the choices of old. Do we accept the good news, the love of our God, or do we resist it, not quite believing that the only response expected is love in return. That response brings us into a deeper relationship with God and also holds the promise of commitment and responsibility - for ourselves, for each other and to our God. Today let us reflect and pray for the gifts of wisdom and courage to follow the Christ into this love relationship and to celebrate with joy and peace His birth brings to all of us.

A HAPPY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR TO ALL

From the Office and Pastoral Staff at Holy Spirit

May the light whose birth we are celebrating in this Christmas Season guide your steps throughout the coming year. May the joy and peace of Christ fill your hearts and bring you into a deeper relationship with Him and with each other through Him. May your journey of faith flourish and grow, just as our community of faith flourishes and grows. Happy New Year!

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS OF CHILDREN
WHO WILL CELEBRATE FIRST EUCHARIST
DURING THE COMING EASTER SEASON.

An important meeting for all Parents of candidates for First Communion will take place on Tuesday Jan. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. You will be receiving letters from Holy Spirit and St. Gerald’s school for those children in Grade 2 next week. This meeting is crucial to the understanding of how we will celebrate at Holy Spirit Church.

As with all Sacraments, only those parents of children who participate in Sunday Liturgy at Holy Spirit Church will be celebrating First Eucharist in our community of Faith. If you are in one of our two schools and celebrate at another parish, you are asked to contact their office for information on your preparation in your home parish.

The call to celebrate sacrament comes from within the community of faith where you are known and with those you know. Sacraments are communal events and are the life blood of all communities of faith.

If you cannot attend the meeting for serious reason, you are asked to contact the office. It will be necessary to make an appointment to see the parish catechist or Pastor. This information session will not be repeated and is geared for an adult audience.

TUESDAY JAN. 13 AT 7:00 P.M. IN THE CHURCH

OFFERING ENVELOPES:

Please pick up your envelopes if you have not already done so. They are at the back of the Church for your convenience. You will notice that the first three envelopes pertain to an initial offering to defray printing costs, an envelope for Jan. 1 and a Church Improvement Envelope.

Church Improvement Collection will take place on the third Sunday of every month. The envelopes appear at the beginning of each month, with the exception of July and August.

The timing is set so that those who are paid twice a month, the most common form of payment, will be able to budget their finances. You will be reminded each month at this time so that you can prepare for this collection.

Many of you have commented on the improvements made with your donations so far. In order to continue this good work, your help is needed. Many thanks in advance for your generous support. January collection for Church Improvement: January 17-18, 2004.

Envelopes put into the Sunday collection are certainly welcome at any time and will be allocated to the Church Improvement.

Parish Bulletin for Jan. 11, 2004

Baptism of the Lord.

Today's feast celebrates the Baptism of the Lord and is also the culmination of the Christmas Season. The whole of the Advent and Christmas season has been getting us ready, calling us to repent, change our ways, and open our hearts to the coming of the Messiah. The celebration of Christmas marks the coming of the Lord in history and the "Word was made flesh and dwelt among us." Epiphany celebrates God's unlimited glory, shining from east to west and illuminating all of creation. The Baptism of the Lord is also a feast of the divinity of Jesus. It is public manifestation to all that the promises of the prophets have been fulfilled. God has promised a Messiah and has delivered on that promise in His Son Jesus.

The baptism of Jesus takes place at a unique time in the life of the Jewish people. It is important to remember that John the Baptist plays an important role as the one who prepares the way. Never before had the Jewish people been exposed to the baptisms taking place in the river Jordan. Baptism in the Jewish tradition was reserved for those who were coming from outside the Jewish faith and wished to become a member. John calls for repentance — a change of heart — an understanding that our lives are to be lived in harmony and love for God and neighbour. His washing with water was a sign of willingness to change inside.

Jesus begins his public ministry with his baptism in the river Jordan. He is the "Word of God" made flesh and he is bringing a new way of being into the world. This single event brings eternity into the world of time. It is the promise fulfilled, the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end time that is the dawn of eternity.

This is a very short and very familiar gospel. We need to pay close attention to what it is revealing. We need to ponder these words in our hearts as we prepare for the Lord of history to return in glory. Rejoice and be glad!

— Rev. Thomas G. Moore

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE WEDDING FEAST OF CANA
John 2:1-12

Only in the gospel according to John do we find the story of the wedding feast at Cana. This miracle story is one of seven signs found in this particular gospel. Signs of what? What is John doing? Why is his gospel so very different in both style and content to the other gospel writers? Why are we treated to the Cana story at the very beginning of the period we call Ordinary Time?

All the books of the Bible are works of faith; John's gospel is a complex and profound meditation on the greatness of Jesus and his importance in and for our lives. The purpose of these signs is to convince the reader that Jesus is the living presence of God among us and that through Jesus God will lead us to true wholeness, happiness and peace of heart. Further, John is not content with just telling the story and leaving his reader to interpret the miracle. He explores their meaning and marks the account with the teachings of Jesus through his lengthy discourses full of the symbolic language that we have grown to accept without question: life, light, darkness, and the Word. Jesus is the light that has broken through the darkness and John has set out to make sure that we understand in no uncertain terms just what he means.

The Cana story is the first recording of the signs. This episode has captured the imagination of Christians throughout the centuries. This is also a popular and recommended reading for our marriage liturgies, although those who do not truly understand its significance or recognize the style and purpose of the writer can misinterpret it.

My apologies to those who believe it is a story about a son pleasing his mother. Ditto to those who may believe it is a story about wine quality. The point of the story lies in the fact that Jesus is truly the Messiah, the Son of God, come to bring us into new life. Look at the details. Mary sees people in need; to run out of wine at this gathering will bring shame and embarrassment. She knows that Jesus can answer the need and she makes the request. Not put off by his initial response to her interference, she simply instructs the servants to "do whatever he tells you." Jesus' response to his mother is terse and to the point. "My hour has not yet come." John introduces one of his symbolic terms by using the word hour. This is referring to Jesus' death and Resurrection, the climax to the Gospel story. It was not yet time to reveal his identity and mission completely. Yet he does fulfill the need and thereby answer Mary's plea.

The changing of water into wine is a powerful foreshadowing to the way in which his mission will be completed, although that revelation is not evident to the disciples. They simply see by the abundance of the wine and its' quality that Jesus is truly the visible presence of God and they are inspired to believe. Something new and wonderful is happening to them through Jesus. The in-breaking of the kingdom is upon the world and the New Covenant is established, a covenant that will be sealed on the cross and celebrated at the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

Today we once more celebrate Epiphany. The Lord of all has begun his great work of salvation and has revealed himself in glory. As we did on the Feast of Epiphany, let us recall the words from the Liturgy of the Hours for that day. "Three mysteries mark this holy day: Today the star leads the Magi to the infant Christ; today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast; today Christ will be baptized by John in the river Jordan to bring us salvation."

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

THE COMMUNITY OF FAITH

Paul's letters are considered to be the first documents that were written testimony to the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus. Following his radical conversion on his way to stamp out this motley collection of Christians, Paul embarked on his mission to spread the good news to an impressive number of communities. As he made his way from one community to the next, reports of misunderstandings, squabbles, disagreements, and misinterpretations were answered by the many letters that are a part of the New Testament. His letters clarify for us today the challenges that faced the fledgling communities of Christians and put us in touch with our own questions and need for encouragement on a journey of faith that brings us all into the one body of Christ.

Today's letter to the Corinthians was written in answer to reports that the community in Corinth was getting caught in the age-old power struggles of rank, privilege, and special status. The response that Paul wrote to the Corinthians has formed the basis of belief that the Church holds to this day as it describes what it means to be a member of the Christian community. Together, we form the body of Christ. Baptism is entrance into the body of Christ. Through baptism, the Spirit of God fills us with divine Love, a Love that knows no distinctions, a Love that makes no separations, a Love that offers equal dignity to all its members. The community of faith recognizes no insignificant members: all are important to the whole.

Paul takes great care to leave no room for misunderstanding in this all-encompassing community of believers in Christ. The weak, the less respectable, the less honourable members are to receive even more attention. Society in Paul's time was no different from our own. We can so easily fall into the trap of feeling somehow superior to the weaker members among us. Paul leaves no room for disdain or false pride; everyone is necessary in this body of Christ.

The human body is a living, breathing organism that is amazingly complex. Every part of the body has a role to play and must be working well in order for the body to function properly. If any part of the body is in pain, the whole person suffers. The Spirit of God is the life giving force activating everything that the community of faith does. Every part has a role to play, whether that be as apostle, prophet, teacher, healer, or interpreter. All may take part – Jews or Greeks, slaves or free – as Paul so aptly puts it. The unifier, the power to be, the life giving force in the community of faith is love.

The community of faith is a living organism inspired by the Spirit of love united in the body of Christ to follow the example of Jesus himself. Belonging to the body of Christ means that we accept responsibility for each other; it means that we recognize the dignity of each part of the body; it calls for relationship with each other and with our God. Today let us offer our thanks for the gift of belonging and praise to the God who has so loved us.

AMEN

Such a short word in our vocabulary and yet such a powerful one! This word belongs to the community of faith and is our ratification of belief in the Lord. Think about the times we use it in the celebration of the Eucharist. It is our response to the Word, it is our response to the Eucharist, and it is the response we give when we share at the table of the Lord. The Great Amen is sung out on Sunday, the day of the Lord, and it should shake the rafters. It is our response to the truths of our faith. It means so be it, or I believe, or right on!

When we are sharing at the table of the Eucharist, the minister offers communion with the words: Body of Christ. We answer with: Amen. This is an important part of our tradition because it is our ability to ratify and verbalize our belief that we are indeed a member of the community of faith and that we accept all that membership entails. It is, in effect, our response to the gift of faith. When we are tempted to a silent response or when we use a different phrase such as thank you, remember the meaning of this particular four-letter word. Don't be surprised if you are prompted to respond with Amen. You don't want to miss the chance to say yes to the Lord.
